🛡️

This lab is about defense — only. Students build tools that detect and explain scams and phishing to protect people. We never write malware, attack tools, or phishing — not even “to learn” — and we use public, anonymized data only. If you find a real threat: report it to a trusted adult or platform, don't engage.

What you'll build

Catch the scam. Explain it. Stay humble.

Students combine real machine learning with the AI-agent skills from Level 1 to build a working security tool — and learn the defender's mindset: no single filter is ever enough.

🔎

A scam detector

Train a real model on public message data to flag scams and phishing automatically — two ways: rules and machine learning.

👥

A security crew

Four agents — Detector, Threat-Explainer, Robustness Reviewer, Writer — that analyze a suspicious message together (built with CrewAI).

📊

A 3-tab dashboard

Threat Explorer, a detector with a live threshold slider, and a security-brief generator.

The 4-week plan

From scam awareness to a real security tool.

Four weekly 2-hour live sessions. Small groups, with all data and AI access provided — nothing to install or pay for.

Week 1 · Threat Data

Know the enemy

01Phishing & scam red flagsUrgency, strange links, prizes, requests for secrets.
02Explore real threat dataBuild a “threat data card” — what's covered, what's missing.
Week 2 · The Detector

Build & evaluate

03Rules vs MLRed-flag rules and a trained classifier — and compare them.
04Missed attacks & thresholdWhy a missed scam is the dangerous error; tune the dial.
Week 3 · Explainer + Robustness

Explain & stress-test

05The AI explainerExplain the red flags in plain English (safe, defensive prompt).
06Why no filter is perfectRobustness & defense in depth — the defender's reality check.
Week 4 · Crew + Dashboard

Ship it

07The Security Analyst CrewDetector → Threat-Explainer → Robustness Reviewer → Writer.
08Dashboard, brief + checklistShip the app; take home a Cyber Safety Checklist; earn your certificate.
The module that makes real defenders

No filter is perfect — so we plan for it.

It's easy to build a detector. The real skill — the one that matters in security — is thinking about how it fails, and defending in layers. Students leave humble, layered, and skeptical.

Detectors are brittleUnusual wording can slip past a filter. We study the limits only to build stronger defenses — never to bypass systems.
Missed attacks matter mostA scam that gets through (false negative) reaches a victim — the failure to watch for.
Defense in depthNo single layer is enough — filter + human check + reporting + MFA + a trusted adult.

The final product

A 3-tab Security Dashboard — plus a family checklist

A real web app students build and demo, with a live threshold slider as the star feature.

Tab 1Threat Explorer

Dataset overview, scam vs legit counts, and the words that signal scams.

Tab 2Detector

Paste a message → scam/legit + confidence, plus a live threshold slider.

Tab 3Security Brief

Paste a suspicious message → red-flag explanation + safe next steps.

🛡️

Bonus take-home: a polished one-page Cyber Safety Checklist (PDF) every student can share with family — useful even to non-coders.

Questions parents ask

Good to know

Is this teaching my child to hack?+

No — the opposite. This is strictly defensive. Students build tools that detect and explain scams to protect people. We never write malware, attack tools, or phishing, and we use only public, anonymized data. The course explicitly teaches “report, don't engage.”

Does my child need the Agent Builder Lab first?+

It's strongly recommended — this Level 2 lab builds on the AI-agent skills from Level 1. Students with solid Python and AI basics from elsewhere can also fit; reach out and we'll help. Enrolled students get Python and AI-math prework on our portal.

Is this real cybersecurity, or just coding?+

Both, by design. Students build a genuine scam detector and AI tools, but the heart of the lab is the defender's mindset — why no filter is perfect, and why we layer defenses. That maturity stands out on CS and STEM applications.

What data does my child work with?+

A clean, ready-to-use course dataset of example scam/legit messages (built in — no setup), with the option to level up to a well-known public research dataset. No private messages, ever.

What do they leave with?+

A working AI Security dashboard, a one-page Security Brief, a Cyber Safety Checklist for the whole family, and a Research Ignited Level 2 certificate. Strong students can extend the project into our Research Program.
